Destiny, 19, Learning to Work
My mother, she didn’t go through all four years of college. She went 2 years and then realized that college wasn’t for her. So she got her 2-year degree and went to work in the police department. I think my dad did the same—2 years, then he joined the Department of Corrections. Even though they’re not struggling, they still want me to be better off than they are right now. They push me to do the best I can. Right now, I’ve gotten accepted to the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. I’ve actually wanted to go to the Academy of Art University since I was 7 years old. I used to watch their commercials on TV all the time and I’ve always had that name stuck in my head. In sophomore year I put it on my list of colleges that I wanted to apply to. I think it was the only art college on my list at that point in time. They have a lot of connections to video game companies, Facebook, and Google and they offer study abroad to Europe. And I hope to work with my college advisor to get in an abroad program so I can stay for a WHOLE semester in South Korea. That’s the plan right now.
