New York City “transfer schools” serve as the last chance for high school students who are too old and who have too few accumulated credits to graduate from traditional high schools.

New York City Mission Society’s Learning to Work Program operates at three of these public schools:

  • Harlem Renaissance High School
  • Emma Lazarus High School for English Language Scholars in the Lower East Side
  • Brownsville Academy High School in Brooklyn

Through internships, career counseling, paid employment, academic support, college exploration, and individual and group counseling, these programs help student’s graduate high school and transition into post-secondary education or meaningful full-time employment.

The Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) provides gainful work experience, educational workshops, mentoring, and regular workplace monitoring for children and young adults ages 14-21. For many participants, SYEP provides them with their first job and the first step towards a successful career.
